Americans CAN Make Pilsner

Today is a very special day, it is now 3 years since the then Soon To Be Mrs Velkyal became Mrs Velkyal in a wonderful Czech civil ceremony in the New Town Hall in Prague. Of course "new" in Prague is an entirely relative term as it dates from 1419 and was the site of the first of the three defenestrations for which Prague is famed (minor political aside - the sooner the Czechs defenestrate Vaclav Klaus, the better). Tomorrow is then Mrs V's birthday - no chance of ever forgetting either event really - and so her best friend came up for the weekend from Greenville and being a top human being all round, she agreed to bring me a selection of brews which as far as I know are not available in Virginia, or at least not in Charlottesville.

The eagle eyed among you will see a can in that selection. The can is a Czech Pilsener from the Bohemian Brewery in Utah.

I was very much looking forward to continuing my search for the perfect American made Bohemian style pilsner, especially when I read through the information on their website. The website says that they do a double decoction mash, lager their beers for 5 weeks and don't pasteurise their beers. The details on the Pilsener (sorry, using their nomenclature) were also encouraging, just 4% abv, so I am assuming desítka territory, using only Saaz hops and fermented with the same yeast as the old Braník beers.

So how was it?

• Sight - golden, topped with the firm white head, looks the part
• Smell - floral, orange blossom, touch of hay
• Taste - lightly grainy, biscuity and with a good dose of bitterness, tastes the part
• Sweet - 3/5
• Bitter - 4/5

The body was medium, perhaps being ever so slightly thin in the finish, otherwise I really, really enjoyed this. That is pretty much my only issue with the beer, but given my experience of American pilsners, I really want to try this on tap as opposed to in the can.

Unfortunately it isn't available in Virginia yet, so when Mrs V and I head down to South Carolina, I will be buying more to put in the fridge, and when we go to Florida in a couple of weeks, taking plenty of cans for the beach. An excellent beer, and I will now have to try the rest of their range!

Bohemian Czech Pilsener in the East Village NYC.

Maaamaaaa… just tasted beer… Czech Pilsner in my hand, popped the tab off of the caaaaaaan

I came up with something or the other three lines leading up to the chorus, but this one was the best.

Check out the Bohemian Brewery website. Can I be impartial about websites and package design? I think I can (no pun intended… you know, because they all come in cans). The lion on the outside feels strong. They love vespas, too – I’ve never owned one, but I’m going to get one this summer. This is the one I want. What do you think? Comments on vespas and beer below!

Oh yeah, the lion. You gotta feel like a man when you’re drinking this, baby. Look at that lion. He means business. I bet that lion chews on expensive foodall of the time. If you put a mask on this guy, you could ride him like He-Man. This is the lion your man could be riding right now.

The Pilsner? Traditional. Where to find it? Gotta go to the land of the Pow-Pow or have a friend send it to you. Be one of the first to try it before they go global with this baby!

Taste: Acidic and tart on the front end, hops come up strong in the finish balanced with the malt

CANFEST, Reno’s International Canned Beer Festival is About Sustainable Drinking

CANFEST returned for its second year in Reno, NV at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino last weekend. Over 20 breweries showed up including 21st Amendment Brewery from California, Capital Brewery from Wisconsin, Oskar Blues Brewery from Colorado, and Tall Grass Brewing Company from Kansas. It’s a festival showcasing craft beer in an environmentally friendly aluminum can. The festival’s proceeds go to The Nature Conservancy. You won’t see bottles here. It’s all about beers in a can! Let’s take a look!

For the Bohemian Brewery to release another pilsner-style lager, on top of those familiar silver and green cans in grocery stores statewide, you know it has to be something special. Everything about this beer is handcrafted in the oldest traditional ways known. For the grain base, Head Brewer Bobby Jackson got his hands on some floor-malted (superior quality) pilsner malt direct from the Czech Republic. Along with the Saaz hops and imported yeast from the Eastern European nation, the ingredients are as authentic as it gets. The method here is classic as well: no modern fancy techniques, just starting from a cold mash and triple-decocting-a long, complicated process of boiling portions of the beer and gradually bringing the temperature up to ensure complete conversion of the grain into fermentable sugar. Brew and lager at cold temperatures, dry hop with even more Saaz hops, and you have a classic Pilsner.

Let's talk about how this all translates into your pint glass. The beer pours a tawny straw color ever-so-slightly darker than the regular pils with a bright white head lingering as you drink it. The flavor is crisp from high carbonation and plenty of hops, but has a smooth and sweet malt base to flesh it out. The strength of the flavor of that special malt really comes through here. The finish is crisp, clean and dry like a pils should be and always leaves you wanting another sip. This stuff is so good, I think Mr. Jackson has a serious shot of winning an award for it the World Beer Cup being held in Chicago, where it will run up against the likes of Pilsner Urquell, the original pils, as well as many other fine German examples. Get your lips around a pint of this quick, before it's all gone. While you're there, check out the Bohemian Brewery's fantastic menu of Czech, Austrian and German classics. My personal favorite pairs the beer with the Pirogies and Bratwurst entree. Enjoy!

On the air in Reno

We were on the air in Reno with Mark Keefe from The X (100.1 fm). We came to town to participate in the worlds first ever Canned Beer Festival. We had a chance to get on the air with Doug from Buckbean Brewing and the guys from 21st Amendment to talk about our beers, sample them and speak about the event that night night.
