Bohemian's Cherny Bock Schwarzbier In Draft

New York Loves our Cherny Bock Schwarzbier!
B / 3.68 rDev -7.1%
look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4
I poured a 12oz can into a tulip class (because the can actually recommends a tulip for this beer)
Appearance: jet black with hazy ruby red glow on the underside. Forms a two-finger, off-white, soapy head. Retention is decent with minor lacing.
Smell: Lager yeast and slight toasted malts. Fairly sweet-smelling, but for the most part it's unaromatic.
Taste: For such a statistically "small" beer Cherny Bock has a lot of flavor, especially for a lager. Despite the name, this beer is more in the style of a schwarzbier than a bock with light malty sweetness up front and distinct roasted malt on the backend. Seems a bit like a light cola with an almost artificial sweetener taste at the beginning and end, but the can indicates this beer is brewed under the conditions of the Germany Purity Law of 1516.
While not the most robust beer in the world, the roasted malt flavor remains quite strong throughout and finishes mostly clean with a slight biscuity aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Thin, cold and wet, but not watery per se. Seems noticeably fizzy at first, but carbonation seems to die down quickly. Not quite a light-bodied beer, but on the lower end of medium-bodied.
Drinkability: With a mild, but genuinely flavorful palate combined with easy mouthfeel, Cherny Bock is indeed a sessionable beer at only 4% ABV. It's refreshing while it's in the mouth and goes down extremely smooth. Might be too mild to stand up to a meal, but could be used as a beverage for chips and finger foods or just to session a six-pack while watching the game.
Overall, an impressive beer for what it's able to accomplish. Nothing spectacular in the big scheme of things, though, but will satisfy most beer drinkers.

Cherny Bock in the East Village
Bohemian Cherny Bock
by Bohemian Brewery
So cherny means “black” in Czech. I think that’s exactly what I say in the video. It’s black. It looks like it’s going to be thick, but it’s not. You usually think of bocks as heavier beers, but this one is refreshingly thinner and easier to drink. Throw out your bock preconceptions, people. It’s a session Bock.
I said that I was going to get a Vespa in the video and in the blog post last week. I seriously don’t know how I am going to afford a Vespa, but I’m going to buy one, mark my words. I’m going to get two matching helmets so the girl I’m taking to the sexy West Village brunch spot can look cute (and be safe). Sign up in the comments section to be the girl in that fantasy. Be prepared to pay for gas. ;-)
Utah has some ridiculous laws about shipping beer. The three-tiered system in place probably helped at some point, but the laws put in place to protect the distributors might be hindering interstate commerce as far as beer goes. I always think the best thing to make sure you have control over something is to legalize it and tax it. You might be able to solve the debt problem by legalizing marijuana if you taxed it enough. I know one former president who would get behind that bill.
Have you had a Bohemian Cherny Bock? Let us know how you like it in the comments section! Please make sure to indicate whether you are just commenting on the beer or would like a Vespa ride, or both.

Bohemian announces its expansion, two new products, and awards
by Jacob Hodgen
Over the last few months, the industrious gentlemen at theBohemian Brewery in Midvale have been very busy. You might think that coordinating a massive expansion that has helped allow them to nearly double their barrel per year output would be sufficient, but this family owned enterprise still has few tricks up its sleeve.
Pete Petras shows off the new batch of Cherny Bock that will be soon be distributed in cans throughout the country.
Though they have been brewing their award winning Cherny Bock for years now, thirsty Utahns have been discontent with only being able to find it on tap. Bohemian’s answer is to launch Cherny Bock in cans, and this month over 55,000 will ship from their Midvalebrewery to locations around the region, and even as far as South Carolina.
Pete Petras is the son of Bohemian owner Joe Petras. He maintains an active role in the growing family business, and he is an evangelist of aluminum cans, which Bohemian has exclusively adopted instead of bottles.
“Cans are much more environmentally friendly,” Pete says. “People are much more likely to recycle them. They weigh a fraction of what bottles do empty, and so the carbon footprint of just getting the package to the brewery is significantly lower. Plus they chill quicker and block out 100% of all light. There really is no comparison.”
Pete took Utah Stories on a tour of their newly expanded facilities and showed us the canning process. He says that massive canning machines used to be impossible for smaller, craft breweries to be able to afford or find space for, but recent advances in technology have simplified the process
“Other breweries use bottles,” Pete tells us, “because they can buy up a bunch of bottles and then just slap on whatever label they want. They do it because it’s easy. Buying cans requires commitment, and that’s what we are all about.”
Pete tells us that they have also been promoting the use of refillable glass growlers. “There’s no better way to go green than to take your growler down to your local brewery for a refill of your favorite hand crafted beer.”
Bohemian has also just launched a new holiday beer entitled Pumpkin Patch. And before we could conjure up memories of the ghosts of bad pumpkin ales from our Christmas pasts, Pete reminds us that at Bohemian, it’s all lagers all the time.

Bohemian Brewery releases Cherny Bock Schwarzbier in a can.
"Darkness Cometh!" That's right, we are now offering our darker, richer and roastier black lager in the form of a canned Schwarzbier called "Cherny Bock". Can you say awesome?

From the Bohemian site:
"The word Cherny literally means ‘black‘ in Czech referring to the color of the rather surprising dark Schwarzbier with gentle bitterness to appeal your palette. A true gem to be discovered by specialty beer lovers."
Bohemian is currently selling cans of their Cherny Bock the brewery but those of you in their distribution area should see it on shelves relatively soon. For those of us that don't live close to the brewery, well, we can just sit around and hope that maybe someone we know who does will send us some!
